Onam FAQ

Onam is a regional festival of Kerala which lasts for ten days. The festival is celebrated throughout Kerala and it is observed during the Malyalam month of Chingam. It is also known as Harvest Festival of Kerala. The day is celebrated to honor the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu and the consequent homecoming of king Mahabali, the legendary king of Kerala. The festival is celebrated with full joy for ten days by all Malayali Hindus. Atham is the first day and Thiruvonam is the final day of the celebration. People wear traditional outfits and decorate their homes beautifully. A carpet of flowers is made at the entryway called 'Pookalam' to welcome the king Mahabali. People purchase jewellery and gift new clothes to their near and dear ones during the festival. Vallam Kali, also known as Snake Boat, is the major attraction of this festival.
